What becomes available to me when I wake up grateful?
31 Reflections Warning: Undefined array key "insert" in /sites/dev.grateful.org/files/wp-content/plugins/wp-word-count/public/class-wpwc-public.php on line 123
The idea of “waking up grateful” could suggest that while I was asleep, I was away somewhere, but waking somehow brings me back – and in the context of this question, I opt to carry gratefulness with the awakening. Maybe the question mark could be before the word, “grateful”. What is “waking” I wonder? Where did I go? Perhaps it is always the other (absence even) that I fear, hate, envy, plan to destroy. Prove to me that thereโs a level on which I am you, and you are me โ and all aspects of our mutual alienation are ended. Is that waking up? Now that is Grateful.
Not sure I can wake up grateful but certainly can remind myself of reasons for gratitude as soon as possible after waking to open myself to the opportunities and beauty inherent to each day.
I donโt normally wake up grateful. In fact my habit is to wake up overwhelmed. By practicing gratitude, Iโm attempting to bring some much needed balance to my life. Itโs helping me be more present and hopefully see the world as it is and not through a distorted lens.
The welcoming invitation to enter into the mornings meditation and contemplations …very nicely summed up in to-day “Word of the Day”
Word for the Day
Something precious is lost if we rush headlong into the details of life without pausing for a moment to pay homage to the mystery of life and the gift of another day.
KENT NERBURN
Positive sensations, joyful perceptions, joyful experiences from the very beginning of the day, perceiving less the hindrances or failures and more the possibilities life has to offer in every moment. It offers hope and faith for all. But the main I feel is that it then fills me and us with the love of life in all of its forms, having the ripple effect of bringing light to each and everything around. Cultivating this is not so easy for me, but I will do my very best. Thank you for the kind reminder, dear Gratefulness-team!
It sets the tone for the day. I gain a sense of joy, optimism and contentment which will influence my actions for that day to my
benefit but also to the benefit of those who encounter me.
My perspective for the whole day is much more positiveโฆpain becomes easier to bear. Presence is easier to maintain. To quote Richard Rohr quoting mystic Caussade: “The purest form of spirituality is to find God in what is right in front of youโthe ability to accept what the French Jesuit and mystic Jean Pierre de Caussade (1675โ1751) called the sacrament of the present moment.”
Waking up grateful is like parting a curtain from the eyes, so I can see and identify delights before me. We don’t “see” these things when we don’t begin our day grateful. I think of how my mother grew up in a rural area without indoor electricity or plumbing, with little money and lots of work, and yet she woke grateful. There are many things if we look for them. This morning I am grateful for the long, silky strings of cobweb i see in the trees outside. They are lit up by the morning sun and look like fine silver threads.
Awareness of the World I am living in – my body and mind; other people; Nature; sounds, smells, tastes, touch, sights; changes; breathing; Spring here; that I can think and remember; Words; Joy and Sorrow; that I can feel
I know that many people say forcing gratefulness is a good idea because it creates a habit. And this is probably true.
These last few days have been difficult.
Repentance isnโt always a pretty bed of roses even if I would like to paint it that way. These last few days I have been having lots of- ugliness come up and out.
I wonโt bore you with the details, but the point is actually I am grateful!
Iโm grateful for this human life and having the opportunity to allow this garbage come up and out of me!
Minds of inferiority, disgust, hate, greed, Blame, anger, distrust, fear, loathing and the list goes on.
I look at this self and wonder who is this ugly person who has all this garbage inside? I am using this whole day or however long this may take to allow it to come up, see it and give it away – let it go. Some may call this giving it to god or the universe. This is repentance!
I am truly humbled and grateful for this whole entire opportunity. ๐
Dear Antoinette, thank you for your lines. I like this honesty of yours very much. Because of my week English I read the commentaries very carefully , hoping to understand them right. I think we all know what your feelings and thoughts are at the moment. At least I do.
You let go, so you know you are not this feelings that are coming up. I sometimes try to let go the one who lets go. Like in a restful deep sleep there is no garbage or anything else.
thank you for your reflectionโ your expression of gratitude was contagiousโฆ it motivated me to rekindle my own repentanceโฆ the price and the joy of being human … expanding our capacities of compassion for self enables compassion for others… it is a good day โฆ Amitofo

I feel when you wake up grateful you just feel happy, you feel like yes you do have something to be happy about. you can be grateful over anything can be a person or a thing. it can be anything what matters is you feel happy and positive. and what becomes available is your mental health, positivity in life. you should feel grateful about everything small things big things everything.
Back in the early 1980’s while working on my masters I had a whacky but interesting professor, a throwback to the 1960’s for sure, teaching abnormal psychology, who passed out bumper stickers to the entire class that read, “Everyone Loves Plastic Bags.” (this was way before our heightened awareness of the problems that our waste and use of plastic was causing.)
He then wrote wrote using jumbo chalk on the blackboard, “Everyone Loves Plastic Bags.” Underneath that he wrote:
“Twenty-five pages. Single spaced. No bulls#@t. Due in ten days.”
I got an A-. I’m sure, Antoinette, you would’ve gotten an A+ because you get it, too! ๐
Everything becomes more intense. The smell of the flowers, the enjoyment of friendships, feeling the soft wind, the warm sun, tasting fruit………. Joy is the all-encompassing word.
