Today like most days I am grateful for public parks and the magnificent outdoor pool in my neighbourhood. Public money, imagination, and expertise created and maintain them and good decisions make them available to everybody. My response is the be a cheerful and very willing taxpayer :)!. And never take them for granted.

It feels a gift if someone who just passes by is kindly greeting, looking into the eyes, a friendly Hi, smiling. I do the same when passing someone, and it is joy to see the other fellow one smiles and obviously feels a little bit happier also. Sometimes they are surprised, or it is as if they just wake up then, astonished. It lifts spirits immediately in all concerned. To greet intentionally, kindly and with warmth for the other`s being there can make someones day, and mine also.

I love these questions that remind me how much there is to be thankful for.. I am constantly getting gifts from those who serve us, from anyone who, by being sensible, is protecting us against Covid, from anyone who is caring for our world, who smiles at me in passing, who lets me out on a busy road, who keep the food flowing…In return, I try to pass these gifts on to others by helping where I can, wearing my mask, thinking about how I can make life easier for others, smiling and giving a cheery word….In other words, by thinking of others as they think of me. This question reminds me how important it is to do this and how valuable someone else may find it – which makes me determined to think more consciously about it as I go about my daily life.

I have been reading about all the terrible forest fires in my state of Oregon. I am grateful to the thousands of firefighters risking their lives in unimaginably hot and dangerous conditions. I thank them today and everyday.

I bought myself a gift on amazon – a pair of ‘kevlar’ gloves for grating carrots shorter, and I gave the right-handed one to my neighbor. I’m left-handed.

WHAT ARE THE GIFTS IN MY LIFE FROM PEOPLE I DO NOT KNOW (PERSONALLY)? HOW CAN I PASS THOSE GIFTS ON TO OTHERS?

I did not expect genuine compassion from individuals I do not personally know. I have been blessed with encountering energies that are supportive and caring. I am a people pleaser and recently noticed that I was not practicing self care, I was neglecting my mind, soul and body. With this sudden “unexpected love” I have promised myself that self love is a nesecity in-order to receive and give UNCONDITIONAL love.

As reflected in others answers, it would be hard to make it through even one day without the help and work of others. The question is a reminder that I take too many things for granted. As for passing it on, I try to be kind to all who cross my path. I try to be a good listener. We all want to be loved and sometimes the best way to show one’s love is to listen.

Thank you all for the gifts you have named. I am also a recipient of these gifts from unnamed people. I commit to passing them along in kind.

The first thing that came to mind are the services we receive from government like our utilities, public offices, national and state parks, the FDA, the EPA, the CDC, etc. All of these services are kept going by people… people who get up on poles to restore electricity following storm, people behind the counter at the BMV, people at the immigration office, people fighting fires, nurses giving free immunizations for measles, and so on. I’m not sure how to “pass on those gifts” but I gratefully benefit from them.

The second thing that came to mind are books. The other day I was cheered when the answer to the daily question revealed so many readers in our community here at gratefulness.org, because books have been long time friends for me as well. I have enjoyed so much and learned so much from books. They have solved so many problems in my life. The authors of these books gave me gardening and agriculture, history, home fixing skills, thrift, recipes and cooking skills, zen, religions, zero waste and lower carbon footprint skills, knitting patterns, art, photography, breadmaking, nature and nature identification, many craft skills, science, self-help, poetry, and of course many wonderful stories that opened my world to different lives, real and imaginary, and that entertained me.

I pass those gifts on literally by loaning or giving away books, but I also pass those gifts on by teaching what I’ve learned from them, giving away baked goods or crafts that wouldn’t have come into being without an author somewhere, by taking my kids to the library at least once a week when they were younger, by serving on the Friends of the Library board, by encouraging others to put down their phone or laptop once in a while and pick up a book.

This summer, my son home from college, he’s been binge-watching sitcoms in his free time. About a month ago I asked if he wasn’t tired of that and suggested maybe he wanted to pick up a book for a little variety? – he ignored me. 😀 But yesterday he went to the library with his dad and I thought he’d gone to pick up a movie and he said no, he got a book! 😀 😀 😀 😀 ;D

Here in CA, Holly, we have the DMV – I keep thinking ‘BMW’ when I see ‘BMV’ – I was surprised to ‘see’ BMW when I read your recent post about your son 🙂

Yes, and ours used to be the DMV, which I keep wanting to continue to call it and then my teens go, “Hunh?” Lol

Well, that was a ‘free’ mistake about the BMV. The mistake I discovered today cost me $59. My calendar said ‘Thus ‘n So’ renews July 9, and I just discovered that, or course[!] I was billed for another month. How could I have thought that ‘Thus ‘n So’ would just stop?! I’m lucky – someone told me today that I still had ‘Thus ‘n So’, which was to renew on Aug 6, so I cancelled today. I would have known, even so, but – ‘poor me’ – I have a new iPhone that wasn’t notifying me of text messages, but my granddaughter fixed it for me 🙂 – I’m lucky to have such small problems 🙂

Oops. I was wrong! At least I fact-checked myself… eventually! Though the Ohio BMV was once called something else originally, it was not in recent history. I guess my mind muddled it! Oh well. Mistakes are meant to keep me humble. 🙂

In a small town or rural area like ours, when you meet another car on a low-traffic road, you make a gesture of acknowledgement to the other driver. When we walk on the road, we do the same thing with the drivers. It’s a kind of “Hello, I’m human and so are you…” Acknowledgement. I see you.

Everything others have said here. And wearing masks right now, when in public again with the variant out there and thriving…….for me it is a kindness because health-wise I am still vulnerable, and I do have to go to the grocery store and things like that. Can’t wait until my immune system is normal again!

I’m wearing a mask, too, Mary Pat. Never stopped wearing them in stores, and even though it is bothersome in humid weather to breathe, even though I’m vaccinated. My reason for wearing it was for other people, so it is so nice to hear from someone for whom masks matter! Thank you, Mary Pat.

I have never looked at these things as gifts but you are right they are so!!!
When I am in the wrong traffic lane and need to get over, and someone let’s me into their lane!
When someone picks up a piece of trash and disposes of it on the street!
When people pass and look me in the eye and acknowledge my presence.
When folks keep their yards nice so that it is a pleasure to walk and admire God’s beauty.
When I drop something at the grocery store and someone picks it up for me!
These are all gifts that go unnoticed or appreciated until my eyes see differently:)

The daily gifts I get from people are the warm smiles or eye contact of kindness. The gift of driving safely. The gift of so many of them choosing to work with compassion or completing daily task that benefits me and my love ones. I can pass these very gifts by not only doing them but speaking on them. I can improve areas of weakness that can make me be a more responsible driver. I can work keeping a frame of mind that is positive and may produce quality work from me.

Smiles, hellos, people providing customer service, friends providing support and hope, my neighbour who I don’t know we’ll, offering to take away refuse from my driveway. I can offer the same ideas to others in an attempt to spread kindness and support throughout the past world.

Smiles, open doors, free yoga videos on youtube. I give smiles, I let people in front of me whether it be opening the door for them or letting them in a store line because they only have a few things. The yoga part… well, I pass that gift on by sharing the peace, light, and compassion that yoga teaches me. Have a good day, all!

Without a doubt, the most significant “daily gifts” that I receive from other people whom I do not know is their simple, yet profound, physical presence. I see them. They see me. We do not need to speak, and yet, this unknown person, one or many, somehow completes my humanity

Kevin I just LOVE this response. While I enjoy the presence of others already, the pandemic has given me a much STRONGER appreciation of their existence and the timely moment that we are in proximity of one another. Your response reminds me of the movie “I Am Legend” starring Will Smith.

Receiving a smile from a stranger – I do the same when I walk by someone. Genuine niceness – holding doors, offering your seat, etc. Happy National Georgia day to all the Georgians out there:)

I have so many gifts I receive from so many people! Many of which I don’t know personally! I can pass these gifts on by showing up in the world! Giving with an open heart. So for example, I was thought yoga and meditation and now I will teach what I know to anyone who wants to join.
