How has life surprised me in a meaningful way lately?

A friend gifted me with a memoir she recently completed about her son’s life and her own journey, after losing her teenage son to suicide many years ago. Her memoir and words continue to touch me in so many ways.
Another friend gifted me with an evening of live theatre, (which I almost never do) – Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol. It was several weeks before Christmas, and brought me fully into the spirit of what the season is and has always been about.
Before Smoky Mountain, I was steeped in denial and resistance, with heels well dug into the more challenging bits of Christmas (ie. shopping, pressure to give like crazy and spend too much money etc). Being at the live play with friends was an exceptional, timely gift. It allowed me to shed my more Scrooge like bits for another year in the nick of time … Huge gratitude!
A beautiful and engaged “co-production” of a group of kindred friends has done recently, which brought a huge relief to all. That looking for support if needed to move to the better, with creativity and kindness to find a new perspective on perceived wrongs was almost a breathtaking experience concerning the meaningful outcome for the future of a project so very dear to our all hearts. We all now are taking hold of this new vision, taking steps inside and out to make it real. So grateful for this intense working together. It brought much relief for all, including me, having been helped to open up to feel being part of both the group and the process. Thank you, life for this very meaningful gift to all concerned.
Life has surprised me in a meaningful way by having a stray cat, whom I Named Daphne, show up in my life 2 months ago. I took her to the vet And now I brought her inside my home. she is so loving And adorable. Feeling blessed.
After I was having a bad day, I was offered a hug by a coworker, whom I always thought was standoffish, and I realized that I do have people around me who notice and care, I just need to give them the benefit of a doubt and let them in.
I posted a theological question on Reddit, and someone gave me a response that helped me to think through my christology somewhat. I honestly was a little pessimistic about anyone giving a helpful answer, but someone did, and that made me feel like I am making progress on my spiritual journey.
Thank you so much everybody. I feel a bit ashamed because of my bad englisch. Big hug to all of you. Have a peacefull and joyfull christmas evening. Thank you again. You Made me very happy
After a big fight with my sister several years which left both of us not speaking to each other, we made amends. Weโve been texting each other nonstop everyday since, like good old times. At our last family brunch, there was no awkwardness. It was an easy and delightful conversation. Iโm excited about this weekend. Our family dynamics have evolved and for the better.
Christmas season always brings out kindness in people. From the mail person who has an extra spring in her step, to the people in their cars giving you room to merge into their lane, to shoppers in grocery stores waiting in line to check out without the usual stressed faces….kindness is everywhere right now!
Today is my 61 rst birthday. So many good wishes were arriving from people i can hardly remember. Wonderful. Sending a prayer for wellbeing to all of them and to you also. Merry Christmas to all of you. .
May you have a beautiful birthday, dear Hermann-Josef, and may your life be blessed with health and dear friends and loved ones close to you. All the best for you, and Merry Christmas to you, too!
(With the pronoun โmeโ in mind, a little pre-Christmas playfulness here) I donโt know how life has surprised โyouโ lately, because Iโm not You! Iโm me! And all this reminds me of the following, (chanted with excitement and enthusiasm):
I founded and ran a weekend retreat program for Quaker children for many years, and a circle-up game for children in grades two through six went like this:
โI am a neat, fantastic, human person, and n-o-b-o-d-y else is me, see?
From way down there, to way up here, (arms motioning),
NOBODY ELSE IS ME, SEE?
My mudda, my fadda, my whole fam-bamily, is lucky, to-have-ME!
l AM ME, SEE?
And p-l-e-a-s-e,
Donโt you,
Forget it!โ

How deeply I love life. More simply phrased by Mark Nepo, โwe become one with what we see.โ

Covid has certainly surprised us all, hasn’t it? Life is not the same, that is for sure.

I’m so happy for you, Nelson.
