Course Overview
Wake Up Grateful: Open Your Heart to Life is a joyful and profound six-week online course exploring the five foundational principles of grateful living, as articulated by Kristi Nelson in her book Wake Up Grateful. This dynamic self-paced course — recorded during the live online course we offered in spring, 2021 — is an invitation to deepen and expand your relationship with grateful living as a way of life, an orientation for day-to-day living in the best of times and in the most challenging circumstances. We delve into generative questions such as: How does one greet each moment gratefully? What becomes possible when we open ourselves to wonder? How do we truly take nothing for granted? When we tend what we value, what changes? How can love transform our lives and world?
The six video sessions — each 65 – 75 minutes long — are vibrant and engaging, with a rich mix of Kristi’s teachings from the book, guided practices, and conversations with honored guests, Alexandra Elle, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Lynne Twist, and Nipun Mehta. The course also includes the special gift of a video conversation between Br. David Steindl-Rast and Kristi, recorded in April, 2021. We provide you with six abundant toolkits of resources – one for each session – that offer both guideposts and inspiration, and all participants are invited to share insights and reflections throughout the course in our new, online community platform.
The course is designed for anyone wishing to explore the core principles of grateful living — whether new to gratefulness or wanting to deepen a longstanding interest. While we recommend taking at least six weeks to make your way through the course and dive deep into each session’s abundant teachings and resources, please navigate at your own pace. Whatever the rhythm of your learning journey, may it open pathways to greater wellbeing, resilience, joy, and a wholehearted YES to life!

Course Details
Participation & Community
The course is hosted by Sheryl Chard, Director of Education. The learning platform we use allows space for ongoing exchange of reflection and inspiration among participants and course moderators.

Although not required, we recommend having a copy of Wake Up Grateful. The course makes use of the book’s rich collection of reflections, practices, and poetry throughout the six sessions. - Weekly Inspiration Toolkit
Each course session is accompanied by a digital collection of resources that supports the session’s theme, including practices, articles, videos, poetry, music, and more.
Registration
- All registrants will receive a digital welcome packet and login information for Mighty Networks, our learning platform. Mighty Networks is where all course information and interaction live — videos, weekly toolkits, and participant reflections.
- The six-session course is offered for a suggested donation of $50 and allows for registration on a sliding scale. All course fees are fully tax-deductible and help to underwrite this course and all our many free programs. If at least $30 is not feasible for you, please reach out to us at contact@gratefulness.org so we can ensure that all who are interested in this learning experience are able to participate.
